The Global Positioning System is something most people are framiliar with. A network of time-synchronized satellites provides a very accurate location fix for any receiving unit on earth. Recently though, both improvments to the accuracy of GPS through better equipment and technologies like WAAS have made it useful for racing applications.

GPS systems might be useful for finding strange racetracks, but what else? At the high end, GPS units can provide precision combined with differential units capable of determining if your car is over or understeering. What about mid-range applications?

The availability of low cost GPS reciever capable of sub 1-Hz updates allows for useful information in a racing context to be gathered. It's one thing to know you are going lean in a data log, but it's another to know where exactly on the track you are when that occurs. Other applications that we have focused on involve using GPS to determine interval timing to assist with driver improvment. Everyone has fast laps, but what lets you improve is knowing what's the difference between a fast lap and a slow one. 

No wheel spin, no lock up, no sliding error. No calibration. No laggy 1-hz updates. No problem on dirt. We're anxious to see how the RB Racing OCRA Speedometer fairs on the salt flats.

For 2008, we are doing a number of data acquisition experiments both on and off the track to assess the utility of GPS for our applications - and determine the most reliable and cost effective way to do it.
